Then I said, “Here am I. Send me!” Isaiah 6:8 Strawberry Cleaning: In just 3 days (Wednesday, August 21), we will begin cleaning strawberries for the Minnesota State Fair. In past years, we have been fortunate to have volunteers ready to help each day. Cleaning begins each day at about 8:00 AM and we are usually finished about noon. The amount of berries to be cleaned depends on the weather and crowd size at the fair. Many of our volunteers look forward to this project and enjoy being together and socializing with fellow parishioners! If you have helped in previous years, you know how … [Read more...] about Volunteer Opportunities and Parish Needs for the week of 8-18-2024

Adventures in Scheduling We’ve recently had a couple of scheduling meetings, in order to plan our calendar for the next 12 months or so. It’s very useful to bring together staff members, key volunteers, and Fr. Thomas. We find out who’s doing what, when, and in which space. It’s important to budget our time, space and people for maximum community benefit. Several examples come to mind. For instance, Faith Formation programs are often on Wednesday evenings. That’s also when choir rehearsals occur. Another example involves Loaves & Fishes (L&F), one of our ministry partners. To feed … [Read more...] about Parish Administrator’s Note – August 18, 2024

The quadrennial race for the White House has begun, so you and I will be barraged by whatever it takes to buy our vote. John Ireland (1838-1918), the first Archbishop of Saint Paul, had a strong and unyielding commitment to the proposition that a free and open democracy was the finest way of governance. The Vatican found his proposition scandalous. The Vatican was, to say the least, suspicious of democracy and preferred monarchy as the best form of governance. Ireland’s thoughts were identified, by the Vatican, as the heresy of Americanism. Ireland believed that human beings, given the … [Read more...] about Reflection from Father Steve – August 18, 2024

Over the past two weeks, I have binge watched much of the Paris Olympics. I continue to be amazed by the discipled art of the athletes. These young people prepared for years for this opportunity. They honed their skills by rigorous practice many hours every day in and out of season. I was impressed by interviews with the Ukrainian athletes. They spoke of the bombed out condition of many of their practice venues. They told of how they were offered the opportunity to train outside their country; and yet many of them insisted to train in their country as a statement of solidarity with those … [Read more...] about Reflection from Father Steve – August 11, 2024

About Our Budget - 2 I wrote a couple of weeks ago that our Finance Council approved our budget for Fiscal Year 2024-2025 (F25), which began July 1. Last week, I wrote about our revenues. Today, I’ll explore our expenses. One major expense is monthly payments of $10,000 on our million-dollar loan from Catholic Finance Corporation (CFC). We took that loan out in 2016, to install an elevator in the school building ($800,000) and redo the boilers ($200,000). Capital needs are expensive! And they’re necessary . . . we’re also paying CFC about $2000 interest per month on our line of credit, … [Read more...] about Parish Administrator’s Note – August 11, 2024

About Our Budget - 1 I wrote a couple of weeks ago that our Finance Council approved our budget for Fiscal Year 2024-2025 (F25), which began July 1. Today, I’m sharing some details. We’re projecting $950,000 in revenue for F25. Of that amount, we’re budgeting $231,200 to come in through “Sunday Giving”. That includes envelopes (or their equivalent) for weekend Masses, Holy Days, and Christmas and Easter. That compares with $230,400 for last year, F24—an increase of $800, or about 0.3 per cent. That’s basically negligible—or as an accountant would say, it’s not material. If you do the … [Read more...] about Parish Administrator’s Note – August 4, 2024

A few weeks ago, a Saint Matthew parishioner sent me a copy of an article about listening, first printed in Time magazine. Along with the article was a note that she was going to try to do less talking and more listening. For the past six months, my ability to speak has been seriously compromised by cancer and especially by the collapse of my left lung. People told me over the years that I had a voice “easy to listen to.” Some spoke of it as “a radio voice.” I talked a lot, sometimes both on the inhale and the exhale. My mother called me “a chatter box.” She told me that often on the … [Read more...] about Reflection from Father Steve – August 4, 2024

Thinking About Systems If you were to call 911, what would you expect to happen? I know I’d expect an operator to respond quickly. And if needed, the operator would dispatch someone to my location. Our 911 system is just one example of the way our government serves us. There are many others. They’re on my mind these days, as we approach important elections in November. Yes, sometimes a system breaks down. Our governmental systems are large, complicated, and operated by fallible humans. It’s important for us as citizens to pay attention and hold systems to account. The Eucharistic Congress was held in Indianapolis from July 17-21. The last time a Eucharistic Congress took place in the United States was 81 years ago. And it took place in Saint Paul. A Eucharistic Congress is meant to proclaim to all that the mystery of salvation finds its truest expression in the celebration of the Eucharist. In the beginning of the first document promulgated by the Second Vatican Council on December 4, 1963, The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, we read: “For the liturgy, ‘through which the work of our redemption is accomplished,’ (1) most of all in the sacrifice of … [Read more...] about Reflection from Father Steve – July 28, 2024

Finance Matters St. Matt’s Finance Council met on Thursday, July 11. Members approved a Capitalization Policy and our budget for Fiscal Year 2025 (F25), which began on July 1. (F25 concludes on June 30, 2025.) We adopted the Capitalization Policy as a matter of good financial practice. Our chosen threshold is $5,000. That means that items costing more than $5,000 will be treated as capital assets. They’ll be depreciated for financial statement purposes. Anything less than $5,000 will be considered an expense, paid for out of a given year’s budget. As for our new budget for F25, we project … [Read more...] about Parish Administrator’s Note – July 21, 2024

On Sunday, March 10, I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. Shortly thereafter, I began a series of chemotherapy and radiation cycles. Two weeks ago, I had a CT scan and an MRI. No new sites of metastasis. Brain now cancer free. I am a realist and try not to jump to conclusions. I know that I have a chronic illness for which there is no cure. Mission Speaker - PIME Missionaries This weekend, Fr. George Berendt will speak at all Masses about the work of the PIME Missionaries. Founded in Italy in 1850, PIME Missionaries are priests and brothers who dedicate themselves as lifelong messengers of the Gospel to those who have not yet heard the Word of God. They live and work alongside the poorest among us in 19 countries, shedding light on the silent struggles of our brothers and sisters in the missions and connecting them to those with a spirit to help. Pope Francis has a way of seeing reality, making decisions and taking action. Francis’ theological method is made clear when he states: “Realities are more important than ideas” (LS, Nos. 110, 201). In continuity with the methodological preferences of Pope John XXIII and Pope Paul VI, Francis uses the See-Judge-Act method for reflection on, and interpretation of, reality (or the signs of the times, if you prefer), with the goal being transformative social action and justice. The See-Judge-Act method was created by Cardinal Joseph Cardijn, even though its roots can be found in Thomas Aquinas’ … [Read more...] about Reflection from Father Steve – July 14, 2024

PACE & PRISM (P&P) We’re well into July—or as I sometimes think of it, P&P season. This month, I’m documenting all sorts of things for Catholic Mutual (CM), our insurance company. By doing so, we knock thousands of dollars off our insurance costs each year. PACE refers to personnel items. PRISM refers to facilities. I value the whole process, as CM guidelines are basically good practices we should always be doing. The rebate is like very nice frosting on the operational cake. We find the bits and pieces of the story of our patron saint, Matthew, in Chapter 9 of the Gospel and we find him listed as “Matthew, the tax collector” in Chapter 10 where the Twelve Apostles are listed. In Hebrew, the name “Matthew” means “gift of God.” The city of Capernaum, Matthew’s place of work, was built on the side of the Lake of Galilee and had about 1,500 residents. Among those residents were Peter and his family. Peter, Andrew, James, and John were fishermen in Capernaum. Jesus “adopted” Capernaum as his city, “leaving Nazareth he went and lived in Capernaum.” (Matthew … [Read more...] about Reflection from Father Steve – July 7, 2024

PACE & PRISM (P&P) One of my business administrator colleagues recently commented that the many abbreviations used in our work remind her of growing up as an Army brat. Apparently, our Archdiocese rivals the military in the sheer quantity of abbreviations. As you read on, be warned. So, what’s P&P, you might ask? And you might add, don’t tell me it’s short for PACE & PRISM. I answer: PACE stands for Protecting All Church Employees. PRISM stands for Property Responsibility in Service to Mission. The conclusion of the Synod on Synodality will mark the opening of the 2025 Holy Year — Pilgrims of Hope. Francis sees the practice of synodality as a further development in the implementation of the work of Vatican Council II — marking its 60th anniversary in the Jubilee Year. Synodality has to do with openness to the experience, thoughts, desires, and gifts of others. Francis calls this “encounter”, and sees the mission of the Gospel, entrusted to the Church, only carried out through such “encounters.” Listening to others with the ear of the heart in one’s faith community, among other … [Read more...] about Reflection from Father Steve – June 30, 2024

AUP (Agreed Upon Procedures) We’re over the hump with our Fiscal Year 2023 AUP. Auditors from CliftonLarsonAllen (CLA) came in a couple of weeks ago, to review all manner of procedures. Most of them have to do with how we handle money, bank accounts, accounting, and so on. The goal is to minimize mistakes and fraud, e.g., by having two or more people handle money. Prior to the onsite visit by the CLA team, we had a few weeks of advance work. Fortunately, much of our accounting is handled by people at PASC, the Parish Accounting Service Center. Pilgrims of Hope Pope Francis chose these three words as the theme of the Jubilee year 2025 and the 60th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council. Last week, we reflected on what it is to be a Pilgrim people, or as the Council spoke of us as a “Pilgrim Church”. Today, I reflect on hope. The hope to which Pope Francis alludes is not some pious wish or vague desire. The virtue of hope is confident trust and conviction that the promise made will be fulfilled. Hope undergirds the strength of faith. Richard Gaillardetz died in 2023 after a long battle with cancer.
