Church of St. Matthew – Bulletin Insert
August 18, 2024
20th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Liturgical Ministers
Beginning in September, we will have two lectors reading at each Mass. Any individual in 7th grade or older may serve in this ministry. We are also inviting anyone who has been confirmed to join the Liturgical Ministry as a Eucharistic minister.
If you are interested in serving in one or both of these ministries, contact Mary at or call the Parish Center at 651-224-9793. A workshop for all liturgical ministers will take place on Saturday, September 7 at 9:00 AM in the church.
Baptism Preparation Meeting
Parents looking to have a child under eight years of age baptized, please join Cristina Czaia for a baptism preparation meeting in the church. A baptism preparation meeting is required if you have not had a child baptized at St. Matthew’s in the last five years.
- Tuesday, August 20 at 7:00 PM
- Saturday, August 24 at 10:30 AM
Baptisms will be scheduled the second full weekend of each month. For questions, contact Cristina Czaia ().
Liturgy Training Workshop
The workshop will take place on Saturday, September 7 at 9:00 AM in the church.
Please consider joining a liturgical ministry. Because the best way to learn is to do. Ministers new and old are invited to participate. We will hone our crafts as:
- Lectors
- Eucharistic ministers
- Cantors
- Greeters
Individuals age 12+ are welcome to lector. Eucharistic ministers must be confirmed. For questions, contact Cristina Czaia ().
Festival of Rights
All are invited to this coming Saturday’s free Festival of Rights, running from 3:00 -7:00 p.m. at Beautiful Laundrette, 625 Stryker Avenue.
There’ll be music, free food, family fun, and many resource opportunities for West Side residents.
Thirty different organizations—including St. Matt’s—are expected to participate. They include Neighborhood House, CLUES (Comunidades, Latinas Unidas en Servicio), the League of Women Voters, the West Side Farmers Market (WSFM), and Interfaith Action—just to name a few.
There’ll be live music from 4:00-6:00 p.m., free tacos from 4:30-6:30 p.m. a jumpy house, and other family activities. It’s a great opportunity for connection and fun.
I’m glad that St. Matt’s will have a table this year. If you’d like to help, let Angela and me know. We need help with set up (2:00-2:45 p.m.) and volunteers to be at our table throughout the event.
This is the Third Annual Festival of Rights organized by Beautiful Laundrette. We connected with Laurel, the owner, during our West Side Community Conversations last year.

Prayer Requests
Due to a long list of names on our prayer list, the names are divided into groups and rotated weekly for Prayers of the Faithful. Email Angela () or call the parish office (651-224-9793) with changes to keep our list up to date.
When requesting to add a loved one’s name to our bulletin and Prayers of the Faithful, we kindly ask you obtain the individual’s permission. Thank you!
Our parish has several ways in which we can pray for others:
- We include names of those who need our prayers in our bulletin.
- We include names of those who need our prayers in the Prayers of the Faithful during Mass.
- You can include names in the Book of Intentions, found in the back of the church.
Logo Survey
As the Communications Committee moves forward to create a new website for St. Matthew, we need to update our parish logo. A new logo will give us a consistent way of presenting our name, Church of St. Matthew, in the digital world and on all printed pieces, such as the bulletin, letterhead or signage. We will be working with a professional designer for this project, and we would like to get your input before we start.
This weekend, there will be drawing materials in the back of church after Mass. You are invited to share your idea for a logo design by drawing or writing down the top 3 words that you feel identify our community. This is not a contest, and all images will only be used as inspiration for our designer. Please share your ideas with us!
Gifted and Belonging
Gifted and Belonging (GAB), a Catholic social club for young adults with disabilities seen and unseen, will meet at Harmon Park in West St. Paul from 6:00 – 8:00 PM on August 25. Bring outdoor activities, snacks or beverages and chairs! Meet at the northeast corner of the park which is the intersection of Bidwell and Bernard Street West.

Hospitality – Name Tags
Our parish community of St. Matthew welcomes everyone. In this spirit, we ask everyone to wear a name tag at Masses. This helps us get to know each other and further develop a sense of community.
Please see a greeter or usher. They will assist you in getting a name tag. First name only. Thank you for helping our spirit of hospitality!
