Parish Administrator’s Note – November 24, 2024
Love the Poor What do you do when you encounter someone who’s begging for help? How about when a panhandler directly asks you for money? I often wonder what to do. Jesus said that we’ll always have the poor among us (Mt 26:11 and Mk 14:7). I fear that comment sometimes misleads people into thinking we need not do anything on behalf of the poor. That seems a pretty selective reading of Scripture. After all, Jesus goes on to say (in Mark) that “Whenever you wish you can do good to them . . .” One of the many things I appreciate about our St. Matt’s community is that we visibly express our … [Read more...] about Parish Administrator’s Note – November 24, 2024
Reflection from Father Steve – November 24, 2024
Thursday is Thanksgiving Day, that annual civic holy day on which all are invited to remember the graces with which we have been blessed, and to simply say “thank you” to the giver of all good things. Many families will gather under one roof to celebrate the Feast. I write this especially to young people, high school, college age and those young in spirit. My friend Fr. John Forliti gave the following advice to young people who are invited to Thanksgiving dinner. Arrive early, in time to lend a helping hand in getting ready for the feast. It may be help in the kitchen or setting the … [Read more...] about Reflection from Father Steve – November 24, 2024

Then I said, “Here am I. Send me!” Isaiah 6:8 Thank You: To the members of the Men’s Club who sponsored the Turkey Bingo last Saturday evening. Thanks to those worked in the kitchen, behind the bar, sold bingo cards, called numbers and double checked winning cards. The event was well attended! Everyone, even those who didn’t leave with a turkey or extra money in their pocket, commented on how much they enjoyed the evening. Ofrenda: Most people have now seen the Ofrenda in the back corner of the church. Many parishioners have already brought pictures of their family members or friends. Parish Administrator’s Note – November 17, 2024
Remembering I’ve been enjoying La Ofrenda, the table with photos at the back of our church this month. I can’t say I recognize many people, as my memories before 2021 are of other parishes. (I do recognize one photo, of a much younger Fr. Thomas, shown with his late mother. I remember meeting her many years ago. Can you identify that particular photo?) I just added photos of my late mother Vera, father Harold, and sister Carol to our Ofrenda. My brother Don lent them to me after our recent road trip to Mitchell, South Dakota. Here’s the story. We drove to Mitchell to attend the funeral of … [Read more...] about Parish Administrator’s Note – November 17, 2024
Reflection from Father Steve – November 17, 2024
A number of people have asked me, “What are you reading?” I have the time to do a lot of reading and these are some of the books I have been reading over the past few months. The Mole of Vatican Council II, Richard A. Zmuda During the four sessions of Vatican II (1962-1965), a Redemptorist priest, Fr. Francis Murphy, wrote regular columns for the New Yorker detailing the activity of the council. (I have donated my four-volume copy of those articles to the parish library). He wrote under the pseudonym of Xavier Rynne. This historical novel details the escapades of Xavier Rynne. We are Only … [Read more...] about Reflection from Father Steve – November 17, 2024

Recent Finance Questions (and Answers) “Are we solvent?” The answer is yes, we are solvent. Your regular contributions play a major role in assuring we continue to be solvent. Parish Administrator’s Note – November 3, 2024
Election Tuesday I’m happy that St. Matt’s is again serving as a polling place this Tuesday. Our country’s democratic system depends on thousands of churches, schools and other locations providing places for voting. St. Matt’s provides this service for free. It’s one way we contribute to the common good. “Common good” is a term often used in Catholic social teaching. It refers to good things that are possible with others. In many cases, they’re only possible with others. For example, consider public infrastructure such as roads, parks, and schools. Or, think of choirs, bands and … [Read more...] about Parish Administrator’s Note – November 3, 2024

Tuesday, November 5th is Election Day. In a democracy, every citizen, regardless of his interest in politics, “holds office.” Every one of us is in a position of responsibility, and, in the final analysis, the kind of government we get depends on how we fulfill those responsibilities. John F. Kennedy Our trouble is that we do not demand enough of the people who represent us…. We must spur them to more imagination and enterprise in making a push into the unknown; we must make clear that we intend to have responsible and courageous leadership. Then I said, “Here am I. Send me!” Isaiah 6:8 In a recent homily, Fr. Thomas said,…”You can expect God to place before you,…(no matter your age or life circumstances), numerous opportunities for you to create positive actions in the lives of others, our parish and our world.” And that you “will do this through…your generous sharing of your time…and your God-given talents and abilities…” Six and half years ago, our pastor, Fr. Bob Kelly, suggested that we become a volunteer parish. Although saving money was one reason, the other reason was that volunteers tend to take ownership in their … [Read more...] about Volunteer Opportunities and Parish Needs for the week of 10-27-2024
Parish Administrator’s Note – October 27, 2024
On Beggars “Let’s make it easier to be good.” That was one of my main takeaways from a recent talk at Assumption, our neighboring parish just across the river. I was there to hear Dr. Kelly Johnson of the University of Dayton. She gave two talks on “Love of Neighbor and the Fear of Beggars.” I’m curious, you see. I occasionally encounter beggars at our parish office and other spots on our campus. I often see them at street corners. I’ve long wondered what’s the best way to respond. Dr. Johnson didn’t provide a “one size fits all” way to respond. Rather, she started with church and … [Read more...] about Parish Administrator’s Note – October 27, 2024

Thursday is Halloween. This annual autumnal observance is anticipated by children of all ages. I have personal traditions connected with holidays. I spend an hour rereading The Legend of Sleepy Hallow on the day before Halloween. The celebration and costuming of Halloween used to be associated with the November 1st Feast of All Saints. It was the celebration attached to First Vespers of the feast—the eve of All Saints, All Hallows Eve, Halloween. In some cultures, people would dress in costume and gather in the city square. They would sing and dance and eat and drink! At midnight, Death … [Read more...] about Reflection from Father Steve – October 27, 2024

In a little over two weeks, we go to the polls. I don’t think I have ever missed the opportunity to vote. An early pastor of Saint Matthew, Msgr. James Cecka (my history teacher), instilled in his students the priority of voting, “even if the only contest is for dog catcher.” As an elementary school child, dad took me with him into the voting booth on Election Day and showed me the names on the slate and the levels to pull to cast your vote. This was a regular outing on the first Tuesday of November. My ability to get around is somewhat compromised by cancer and the treatments I am taking. Who’s Everybody? “Everybody knows them,” said the school librarian to me. I had just asked her what the school library hours were. This was in 1996, when I had just begun teaching high school religion at Chapel, a Catholic international school in São Paulo, Brazil. I was still learning my way around campus, and I wanted to check out the library, to see what resources it offered. The first time I tried the library, it was closed—and the hours weren’t posted. I was disappointed. When the librarian said, “Everybody knows them,” I immediately had a couple of negative reactions. Wednesday of this week, October 16, marks the 46th anniversary of the Papal election of Karol Wojtyla, known as Pope John Paul II. He was 58 years old and the first Slav to be elected Pope and youngest elected Pope in a century. In 26 years, he visited 129 countries, which included seven visits to the United States. He was the first Pope of modern times to focus on the duty to conserve creation. “The earth will not continue to offer its harvest, except with faithful stewardship. We cannot say we love the land and then take steps to destroy it for use by future generations.” He reminded … [Read more...] about Reflection from Father Steve – October 13, 2024
