Remembering
I’ve been enjoying La Ofrenda, the table with photos at the back of our church this month. I can’t say I recognize many people, as my memories before 2021 are of other parishes. (I do recognize one photo, of a much younger Fr. Thomas, shown with his late mother. I remember meeting her many years ago. Can you identify that particular photo?)
I just added photos of my late mother Vera, father Harold, and sister Carol to our Ofrenda. My brother Don lent them to me after our recent road trip to Mitchell, South Dakota. Here’s the story.
We drove to Mitchell to attend the funeral of Adelaide Mayer, my mom’s best friend for many years. Adelaide was a lifelong Catholic and a brilliant, accomplished woman. She was 106 years old when she died in September. I’m sure she’s now a saint in heaven.
The funeral was at Holy Family, my home parish in Mitchell. I was baptized, confirmed, and received First Eucharist there, and I attended Holy Family School for eight years. So did my five brothers and sisters, as well as all eight of the Mayer kids. There was a lot of overlap between our families.
Going out, Don and I reviewed our connections with Adelaide’s family. There was more remembering at the lovely funeral and luncheon, where dozens of Adelaide’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren gathered, along with many friends of the Mayers.
One of the reasons I enjoy St. Matt’s is because of the small town feel of this neighborhood. It reminds me of Mitchell. I like hearing stories of our parishioners, as people remember things. If you get a chance, please introduce me to your people on the Ofrenda table, preferably with a favorite memory.
Remembering. As members of the Communion of Saints, it’s something we do–especially each November.
May all the saints from St. Matt’s, Holy Family—and all other parishes we’re connected to— intercede in heaven for us.
Have a great week!
