Then I said, “Here am I. Send me!” Isaiah 6:8 Knitting Club: There has been a request to form a Knitting and/or Crocheting Club. Those who enjoy doing needlework, while visiting with others, are invited to take part in this hobby. A perfect opportunity to make articles for personal use or to donate to others. Perhaps prepare articles to put into Isaac’s Blessing Bags next year. If you are interested in taking part in this activity, call the parish office at 651-224-9793. Men are welcome to join. From the Parish Council 2-23-2023
St. Matthew’s Parish Council met on December 7. Here are a few highlights: Listening Sunday – We received a comment that kneelers are too close together and there is not enough room to accommodate people comfortably. We’re looking at how to space out the kneelers so people don’t feel crowded. Future Planning – Building on the recent synod process, the council discussed ideas to engage the parish community around the questions: What do we want St. Matthew’s parish to look like in three years and what would we need to do to achieve that vision? St. Matthew’s Youth Group – Council members … [Read more...] about From the Parish Council 2-23-2023
Reflection from Father Steve – December 24, 2023
December 25, 1878 as recounted in the local paper: Christmas! The day of all days in the calendar! The one day of the three hundred and sixty-five observed by all, religious and worldly, Christian and pagan; and so it was observed yesterday in Saint Paul. As there were people of many minds, the day was observed in variety of ways, each following the bent of one’s inclination. When the somber toll of the bell warned that the Day of Days was about to dawn, people of all ranks and conditions hastened from their homes and out into the piercing cold air hied them to houses of prayer—they … [Read more...] about Reflection from Father Steve – December 24, 2023
Parish Administrator’s Note – December 24, 2023
Merry Christmas! Welcome, one and all, to St. Matt’s for the 4th Sunday of Advent and Christmas 2023. We’re glad you’re here, celebrating Christ’s birth with us! Christmas is a season that features gift giving. I’ve been reminded of that a lot lately. For example, I saw the many gifts this community gave to Isaac’s Blessing Bags. I heard this was the most generous year yet for that project. That’s great! I witness another gift when we gather for worship: your presence, here in church. It is good to be together in person. One more thought: I believe St. Matt’s is a gift to the West Side and … [Read more...] about Parish Administrator’s Note – December 24, 2023
Parish Administrator’s Note – December 17, 2023
Community Conversation #4 (11.28.23) We recently had another good meeting with West Side friends and neighbors. This one was held at Humboldt High School. It was great to hear from HHS students, staff and parents—as well as to tour the building. For example, I learned that Humboldt has an agriculture program, with licensed ag teachers. Urban farming, anyone? Who knew? I also met some very impressive JROTC students. They welcomed us at the front door, guided us to the cafeteria, served supper, and spoke about their program, classes and plans. This meeting certainly focused on Humboldt, … [Read more...] about Parish Administrator’s Note – December 17, 2023
Reflection from Father Steve – December 17, 2023
As appeared in the Pioneer Press in 1951: “The good city of St. Paul became the Christmas City of the nation. Christmas is not just a “day” in St. Paul. Nor is it merely a week or the traditional twelve days. Early in November, store windows begin to display Christmas ‘suggestions’. Christmas tree ornaments appear on the counters of ‘dime’ stores. The familiar tinkle of the Salvation Army bells is heard on the street corners downtown. About the tenth of November, Santa Claus arrives in St. Paul and is paraded through the loop by the Mayor and other city officials, attended by Boy Scouts and … [Read more...] about Reflection from Father Steve – December 17, 2023

Reflection from Father Steve – December 10, 2023
In many homes, the festive decorating for Christmas is underway. A tree festooned with lights, baubles and tinsel bathes the living room in soft magical light. As a child, I delighted in falling asleep in the light of the tree. It is time to prepare the Christmas crèche. The crèche invites us to set out on a spiritual journey, drawn by the humility of the God who became one of us to encounter every woman and man. The crèche depicts this mystery of His great love for us so that we might become one with Him. Coming into the world, the Son of God was laid in the place where animals feed. Hay … [Read more...] about Reflection from Father Steve – December 10, 2023

Parish Administrator’s Note – December 10, 2023
It’s Complicated . . . . . . to prepare for heaven. That was my main takeaway from our November 30 seminar, aptly titled “Preparing for Heaven: Stewardship of Life. Stewardship of Legacy.” Over the course of the morning, speakers repeatedly emphasized the importance of planning ahead. Doing so is one of the greatest gifts we can give our loved ones. Linda Rivera, our parish funeral coordinator, said that she’s happy to meet with people. Planning is much easier in advance, compared to planning while grieving. Among other things, Linda can help you identify a funeral home, explain who does … [Read more...] about Parish Administrator’s Note – December 10, 2023

Reflection from Father Steve – December 3, 2023
The earliest record we have of the observance of Advent comes from the 5th century. Just as the season of Lent was the preparation for the Easter Feast, so the season of Advent was the preparation time for the Feast of Christmas. In both Old Testament times and in the history of the Church, more often than not, agricultural civic events were taken over and imbued with a religious significance. In northern Europe, the season of Advent began on the feast of Saint Martin of Tours, November 11th. The harvest was in, and weather was turning cold. It was time to take the livestock to slaughter. … [Read more...] about Reflection from Father Steve – December 3, 2023

Parish Administrator’s Note – December 3, 2023
Be Careful Out There! Our insurance company, Catholic Mutual, has a regular reminder for all parishes and schools each fall: be careful while walking, driving, or doing anything outside. Cold weather is here. To summarize: do the “Penguin Shuffle” while walking. That is, take smaller steps and watch your center of gravity. We do everything we can to clear snow from our steps, sidewalks and parking lot, but everyone should still be careful. Catholic Mutual also advises us to make sure our buildings are prepared for winter. Reflection from Father Steve – November 26, 2023
Next Sunday is the first Sunday of Advent. Advent is that yearly opportunity to prepare for the remembrance of the birth of the Savior. The birth of the Child of Nazareth, the Son of David, and Son of God, stands at the very center of human history. It is this Jesus who makes visible the merciful face of God. Advent is a time to celebrate beginnings, which are also endings. T. S. Eliot: in the last of The Four Quartets, written in the early part of World War II in London: “What we call the beginning is often the end. And to make an end is to make a beginning. The end is where we start … [Read more...] about Reflection from Father Steve – November 26, 2023
Parish Administrator’s Note – November 26, 2023
CENSUS & SYNOD Last month, we submitted census information to the Archdiocese. Many of the questions had to do with basic parish facts, e.g., physical address, staff members, and programs. There were also “number” questions about the 12 months ending September 30. How many parishioners? How many for this or that sacrament? How many children in Faith Formation? We reported 511 registered parish households and 1,214 registered parishioners. (We also have several dozen active parishioners who are not registered.) We had 27 baptisms (various ages) and 27 funerals. We had 32 students in … [Read more...] about Parish Administrator’s Note – November 26, 2023

All are welcome to join in our next West Side Community Conversation on Tuesday evening, November 28. This will be our fourth such meeting. Once again, we’ll gather as members of the West Side community to listen to other members. As Fr. Steve has reminded us more than once, it is important to listen! As I’ve listened to the stories of others in our community, I’m learning much about local history and possible futures. It’s also good just to connect with neighbors, for mutual support and friendship. The session on the 28th will be held at Humboldt High School. Reflections on Liturgy 11-19-2023
In last week’s bulletin I wrote about hospitality and discovering the gifts of your neighbors. This week’s scripture readings spoke loudly to me of the need to hone one’s own gifts. God has given all of us gifts and it is important that we create practices in our lives that help us to become better at using those gifts. Becoming better at using God’s gifts is hard and sometimes scary work. But as Jesus says in John’s Gospel, “a woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the … [Read more...] about Reflections on Liturgy 11-19-2023

MORTALITY, LEGACY, AND GRATITUDE One of this week’s inserts promotes our free November 30 morning seminar, called “Preparing for Heaven.” Check it out for details. I think it’ll be a great morning, with food for body and soul, along with useful information. I was originally thinking of calling this column, “You’re Going to Die”, based on an October 30 article in the StarTribune. That’s a rather jarring headline, so I went with mortality. When I was younger, I rarely thought about my mortality. I have to admit I’m thinking more about it these days—and not just because of stark headlines. … [Read more...] about Parish Administrator’s Note – November 19, 2023
Reflection from Father Steve – November 19, 2023
Thursday is Thanksgiving Day. This a “civic holy day” in which we remember with gratitude all that we have received. Nothing is so ennobling in a person as a life of gratitude, the ability to say and think “thank you”. Cicero, the Roman philosopher-politician, declared gratitude as the parent of all virtues. He used examples to defend his belief and posed questions as relevant today as when he asked them 2,000 years ago. “Do we really love our parents if we are not grateful to them for what they have given us? Are we good citizens if we don’t recollect the kindness received from our … [Read more...] about Reflection from Father Steve – November 19, 2023
