Parish Administrator’s Note – March 12, 2023
FUNDING OUR FACILITIES—PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE Next month, I’ll complete my second year here at St. Matt’s. I’ve learned a lot about this great community since I began. As a former history teacher, it’s been fascinating to dig into the history. The other day, for example, I saw a copy of a 2003 letter from Fr. Steve to the parish. In it, he talked about the progress of that year’s capital campaign. Goals at that time included tuckpointing, windows and restorative work on the historic school building. “So that’s why the brickwork looks so good,” I said to myself. And I was glad to have a … [Read more...] about Parish Administrator’s Note – March 12, 2023
Reflection from Father Steve – March 12, 2023
This weekend marks the tenth anniversary of the election of Pope Francis – in many ways an historical milestone- the first Jesuit to be elected Pope; the first Pope from the Southern hemisphere; the first Pope to carry the name Francis. Pope Francis is the first Pope to be ordained a priest after the Second Vatican Council – his entire life as a priest has been in the post—Vatican II Church. Pope Francis is not born and bred in a euro-centric Church; Church experience for Francis is the Church of the South. Two of the many gifts that Francis brings to the Church: a spirituality grounded in … [Read more...] about Reflection from Father Steve – March 12, 2023

St. Matthew’s Is Led by Lay Members
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? This is the first of a five-week series from the St. Matthew Parish Council Our parish is one of the very few in the archdioceses led by lay people. Fr. Steve Adrian, who is officially retired, is our sacramental minister. He presides at Mass and other sacraments but has no other responsibilities. Fr. Antony Skaria is our parochial administrator, which means he has oversight responsibilities, but he is also the pastor of St. John Vianney. At St. Matthew’s, the Parish Council, the Finance Council, and the parish administrator work together to run the parish. Archbishop … [Read more...] about St. Matthew’s Is Led by Lay Members

Choir at St. Matthew Is Back for Holy Week!
It’s time once again for choir at St. Matts! We will again embrace the concept of a “Festival choir.” “Festival choir” means we rehearse for a limited number of weeks, to prepare for a limited number of services. We will rehearse four weeks during Lent to prepare for singing during Holy Week. Generally, we will meet on Wednesday evenings in the church. (Some adaptations to time and/or place may be necessary to accommodate the Faith Formation program.) We may also explore the option of hybrid rehearsals where some attend in person and others attend online with rehearsal recordings available. As … [Read more...] about Choir at St. Matthew Is Back for Holy Week!

FUNDING OUR FACILITIES At our most recent Parish Finance Council meeting on February 23, we discussed how our fiscal year 2023 expenses (7.1.22 - 6.30.23) compare to what we budgeted. We noticed that we’re over budget when it comes to maintenance and repairs. I asked our accountant for details. Here are the major items in the detail report. We’ve paid for them out of our operating budget. Repairing the church’s air conditioning system: $4,196 Parish Center roof maintenance: $6,590* Church building LED conversion: $6,603* School building repairs required by fire marshal: … [Read more...] about Parish Administrator’s Note – March 5, 2023
Reflection from Father Steve – March 5, 2023
Note: The use of GS and a number points to the paragraph in the council document on the Church in the World Today. GS refers to the Latin title of the document, Gaudium et Spes (Joy and Hope). The final months of the Second Vatican Council were given to crafting a document reflecting the vocation of the Church in the world of today – a declaration of the Christian’s solidarity with the human family: ”the joys and the hopes, the griefs and the anxieties of the people of this age, especially of those who are poor and afflicted, these are the joys and the hopes, the griefs and anxieties of the … [Read more...] about Reflection from Father Steve – March 5, 2023

MINISTRY OF LECTOR Earlier this month, we offered a lector workshop, led by Moya McGinn-Matthews of Christ the King parish in Minneapolis. The workshop was for all lectors, as well as for those interested in becoming a lector. The workshop went well. The 14 participants reflected on what it means to be “Proclaimers of the Word”. Moya then reviewed how to prepare for this important ministry, as well as how to approach, stand and read at the microphone. Brave volunteers served as examples, and I was impressed by the high quality of our lectors. Lectors are a critical ministry in our worship. … [Read more...] about Parish Administrator’s Note – February 26, 2023
Reflection from Father Steve – February 26, 2023
In January I was encouraged to write something about what I am reading. Reading has been a significant part of my life since childhood. As an elementary school child I begged my dad to take me with him when he went downtown on Saturday mornings to do some business; I asked him to drop me off at the main library and then pick me up when he was finished. There was a section on the lower level of the library “The Children’s Room”. It did not take long for me to decide that I wanted something more challenging than what this room provided. The next room was called “The Skinner Room”. It had books … [Read more...] about Reflection from Father Steve – February 26, 2023

Reflection from Father Steve – February 19, 2023
This Wednesday, February 22nd is Ash Wednesday – the beginning of the Season of Lent 2023. Ash Wednesday Liturgy is at 8:00 AM and 7:00 PM. Lent is the annual opportunity for each of us to look at our Christian lives; and make some adjustments in our religious practice or attitudes. Mostly the season is the annual time to remember that our love of God is found only in our love of neighbor. We are called to see the face of Christ in our neighbor, co-worker, or family member – not always an easy thing to do. We are asked to see the social sin around us that so often is neglected or avoided … [Read more...] about Reflection from Father Steve – February 19, 2023
Parish Administrator’s Note – February 19, 2023
CHURCH What comes to mind when you hear the word, “church”? When I was a child, I’d think of the Catholic church building where I attended Mass. Years later, with the benefit of theology courses at St. Thomas, I learned the word church could refer to more than a building. Indeed, church can refer to an institution or to a community, among other possibilities. How we refer to church—how we think about church—influences our planning, budgeting and ministries. When I think of our church as a community, I tend to think of people’s names and faces. I offer support to other people, and I feel … [Read more...] about Parish Administrator’s Note – February 19, 2023

During February, Black History Month, until Lent begins, we will be singing Eucharistic Prayers set to the tunes of African-American spirituals: Alleluia- “Oh! ISAIAH’S WORDS FOR ST. MATT’S Who else noticed how the Prophet Isaiah’s words last weekend (58:7-10) were a remarkable survey of our parish missions? I mean, c’mon: • Share your bread with the hungry (Loaves & Fishes; Food Shelf) • Shelter the oppressed and the homeless (Casa Guadalupana) • Clothe the naked (Isaac’s Blessing Bags) • Do not turn your back on your own (Mutual support, prayer, Faith Formation, St. Mary’s Clinic, AA, GAB) I first noticed these words on Saturday morning (Feb. 4), at our Lector Training Workshop. Reflection from Father Steve – February 12, 2023
Continuing from last week: The second paragraph of the Introduction of the Vatican II teaching on the Liturgy focuses on the Eucharist – our weekly gathering at the altar. Once again, my comments are found in the italic script. Fr. Steve For the Liturgy, “through which the work of our redemption is accomplished”, most of all in the Divine Sacrifice of the Eucharist, is the outstanding means whereby the faithful may express in their lives, and manifest to others, the mystery of Christ and the real nature of the true Church. Our Sunday liturgy is to both express who we are and witness to … [Read more...] about Reflection from Father Steve – February 12, 2023

PARISH COUNCIL At our January 26 Parish Council meeting, someone suggested we start putting Capital Needs donation envelopes in the back of the church. I think that’s a good idea. (Not everyone receives the bi-monthly envelope packet, which includes Capital Needs envelopes.) We’re planning some major capital projects this year, such as replacement of the main electric panel and roof work on the school building. To pay for them, we’ll need a combination of fundraising and financing tools. One fundraising tool is the envelope system. Reflection from Father Steve – February 5, 2023
As we approach the Season of Lent and strive more fully to enter into the celebration of the Eucharist, in which the very presence of the death and resurrection of the Lord is found, it seems an appropriate time to reflect on the principals found in the introduction of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy of Vatican Council II. This is the first of two weeks reflection. I have written little statements in between the text of the Council. My remarks are in italic script. Fr. Steve Adrian Sacrosanctum Concilium – Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy – Second Vatican Council Promulgated by His … [Read more...] about Reflection from Father Steve – February 5, 2023
