We are replacing our current Gather Comprehensive 2nd Edition hymnals (published in 2004) with new Gather IV hymnals. Not only does this hymnal include many of the “greatest hits” of the past 18 years, it also has a current Order of the Mass that reflects liturgical language changes instituted back in 2011. If you would like to honor people in your life by dedicating a new hymnal to them, you now have that opportunity with a special nameplate placed inside the front cover. The recommended donation is $20, which will be used to defray the cost of the hymnals. Many thanks to those who’ve … [Read more...] about Order form for new hymnal dedication bookplates

Parish Administrator’s Note – December 11, 2022
PLEASE SUPPORT OUR RETIRED RELIGIOUS Our second collection today supports religious sisters, brothers and order priests. They devoted their lives to prayer, service, and works of mercy. Most ministered for little or no pay. Their religious communities do not have enough retirement savings. Your gift helps to furnish medications, nursing care, and other necessities. Please use the special envelopes for this collection. Make checks out to the Church of St. Matthew and put “Religious Retirement Fund” in the memo line. You may also contribute to the Religious Retirement Fund next weekend, if … [Read more...] about Parish Administrator’s Note – December 11, 2022

This service is offered twice a year, once now before Christmas and in the spring of the year before Easter. Also each day from December 19th through Friday, December 23rd Private Confessions will be available in the Chapel. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is the Sacrament of God’s mercy and compassion. Sins are not the focus of our attention; our eyes are focused on God, a gracious and merciful God who seeks to draw ever closer to us. Sometimes people talk about “their search for God”. In … [Read more...] about Reflection from Father Steve – December 11, 2022

HAVE A BLESSED ADVENT Happy New Liturgical Year! The season of Advent starts our church calendar anew; sorry I missed greeting you in last week’s bulletin. One reason I look forward to Advent each year is that we have the opportunity to sing special hymns of the season: Advent season, that is—with its hymns of anticipation and longing. I also like Advent’s gradual build up to the full glory of Christmas, as opposed to skipping straight from Thanksgiving to Dec. 24-25. In that spirit: if you stop by the parish office in the next couple of weeks, please admire the Advent wreaths, among other … [Read more...] about Parish Administrator’s Note – December 4, 2022
Reflection from Father Steve – December 4, 2022
The Christmas Season begins at various times in various places. In northern Europe the Christmas Season begins on the Feast of Saint Martin, November 11th. This time of preparation for Christmas is known as ”Saint Martin’s Lent.” In southern Europe the Christmas Season begins on the Feast of Saint Nicholas, December 6th or the Feast of Saint Lucy, December 13th. These times mark the time of the final harvest and the time live stock are brought to market. In the northern regions this occurred a month before the final harvest occurred in the south. It was a time to feast. There was no … [Read more...] about Reflection from Father Steve – December 4, 2022

Parish Administrator’s Note – November 27, 2022
SIGNS OF THE TIMES In a recent homily, Fr. Steve talked about the signs of the times. As he said, it is wise to pay attention to them. It is prudent to act on them. He went on to compare the early 1960s with today. In response to the signs of the times in the 60s, Pope John XXIII called the Second Vatican Council into session. He knew that our Church needed to engage—not retreat—from everything that was happening. How might we read today’s signs? How can we respond, locally and beyond? I’m glad that part of our parish’s continuing response involves feeding the hungry (Loaves & Fishes), … [Read more...] about Parish Administrator’s Note – November 27, 2022
Reflection from Father Steve – November 27, 2022
This weekend we begin a new Church year with the opening of the Season of Advent. Advent is, in part, a kind of “new year” celebration for the Church. In the last weeks of “the old year” and the first weeks of ”the new year” the liturgy of the Church focuses on the final coming of Jesus in glory and the fulfillment of God’s plan for creation. As a society we shun death, we push death under the rug, we are hesitant to speak of death. Parents often find their children unwilling to have the conversation about funeral plans and estate plans. Yet Christian practice and tradition has always … [Read more...] about Reflection from Father Steve – November 27, 2022

ON SYNODS AND SYNODALITY Perhaps you’ve heard of the worldwide synod process initiated by Pope Francis? Or not? After all, most media don’t pay much attention to synods, admittedly a somewhat obscure topic. So, let’s review. In Roman Catholicism, a synod is basically a type of meeting, or a series of meetings. Our local Archdiocese actually began its synod process before Pope Francis did. You may be among those who attended various sorts of local synod meetings over the past three years, whether here at St. Matt’s or regionally. Those meetings involved listening, preparation and engagement … [Read more...] about Parish Administrator’s Note – November 20, 2022
Reflection from Father Steve – November 20, 2022
Thursday, November 24th is Thanksgiving Day. This is the closest we have to a “national holy day”. The holiday was celebrated on the last Thursday of November since President Lincoln’s 1863 proclamation of “a national day of Thanksgiving and praise.” Each year it was up to the President to issue a proclamation to announce the date on which the holiday would fall, but it was dependably set for the last Thursday – that is, until 1939. In two years out of seven November contains five Thursdays. In order to permanently anchor a place for the holiday FDR proclaimed that from now on the … [Read more...] about Reflection from Father Steve – November 20, 2022

WAIT, WHAT, WHICH COLLECTION? I occasionally imagine Old Testament religious leaders saying something like this: “This week’s special collection of goats supports the poor people living on the north end of Jerusalem. Please be generous.” More to the point, our faith tradition from ancient times has asked for support through prayer, time, and treasure—whether our treasure be in goats or dollars. I trust that everyone prays for our parish on a regular basis. I also know that we have many and great volunteers donating their time and talent. (For example: thank you, Men’s Club, for an enjoyable … [Read more...] about Parish Administrator’s Note – November 13, 2022

Next weekend, November 19th and 20th, the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will take place at both the Saturday afternoon Mass and the Sunday morning Mass. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is from ancient times. In the Letter of James we read that a person who is ill should call for the elders and they will anoint the sick person with oil and the person will recover health. Anyone who is seriously ill or in chemical dependency recovery or burdened by the limitations of advancing age or suffering from a chronic illness is encouraged to receive the Sacrament of the … [Read more...] about Reflection from Father Steve – November 13, 2022

THE BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE It’s November. Traditionally, this is the month when we Catholics collectively remember our deceased family and friends. How do we do that here at St. Matt’s? One of our traditions is to write their names in our Book of Remembrance. Look for that book near the front entrance of the church, before Mass begins. Who comes to mind? Write their names in the book. Throughout this month, we’ll place the book in the sanctuary. (The Book of Intentions is placed there for the other 11 months of the year.) The Book of Remembrance tangibly reminds us of an important reality: … [Read more...] about Parish Administrator’s Note – November 6, 2022
