Gifts & Ministries
Remember last week’s Gospel, about the grain of wheat? Jesus said a grain has to die in order to bring forth abundance. And then, Fr. Thomas preached on how we have to die—so to speak—to our fears, feelings of inadequacy, resistance to change, and reluctance to share gifts?
I know I’ve struggled with those feelings. I imagine you have, too. They’re common, understandable aspects of being human.
Which is another reason to value our St. Matt’s community, and the way members overcome their reluctance. I’ve seen how members share their gifts and strengths.
We often say, “We’re a volunteer parish.” Yes! I’ve seen our volunteers care for the poor, feed the hungry, work in faith formation, and on and on. If not for volunteers, our ministries would be weaker or even non-existent.
One of our most important ministries is “the ministry of the assembly.” That refers to our gathering together for worship. It’s another form of volunteerism, where we support each other with our presence.
Of late, I’ve noticed more and more families with young children at our Masses. They’re very welcome, as both Fr. Steve and Fr. Thomas have said. Children bring energy to our worship, and their laughter is a delight.
Holy Week & Triduum
Our holiest week of the year is beginning. Lent is almost over. The Three Days (Triduum) of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter begin in a few days.
Liturgical scholars sometimes speak of the Triduum as one large liturgy, spread over several days. I urge you to experience as much as you can. Check the insert for details.
We are fortunate that Fr. Thomas is with us during Holy Week and Triduum. When I met with Fr. Steve at the hospital last week, he was very relieved to know that our parish is in good hands while he’s out. Let’s keep Fr. Steve in our prayers while he recovers.
Have a great week!
