Spiritual Gifts Recognition Tool (SGRT)
In his letters to the Corinthians, Romans, and Ephesians, Paul identifies the Gifts from the Holy Spirit that contribute to the growth of individuals and the communities for whom his letters were written. Paul uses the analogy of the body to explain how each member of the community is given special gifts for their own flourishing as well as for the benefit of building up the body of Christ. Paul emphasizes that through a variety of spiritual gifts the members of a community are transformed and become interdependent so that no one is greater than another and all depend upon one another. Paul’s letters are very important as a starting point for reflecting upon our own spiritual gifts and how we use them for the benefit of the Church of St. Matthew.
The purpose of the Spiritual Gifts Recognition Tool (SGRT) is to help you discover the gifts of the Holy Spirit you have been given and the strength of the gifts relative to one another. Knowing this information, you become aware of how the Gifts from the Holy Spirit give you a unique spiritual identity that helps you to flourish through the use of your gifts for the benefit of others.
The recognition tool contains 70 statements for adults and 56 statements for youth (Jr. High & High School) and takes approximately 10-15 minutes for completion. After carefully reading each statement, think about how it reflects your life experience. Assign a value to your response using the 0-5 point scale.
0 = Never; Not true
1 = Rarely; Seldom true
2 = Some of the time; Occasionally true
3 = Half of the time; Usually true
4 = Most of the time; Consistently true
5 = All of the time; Always true
IMPORTANT! Do not assign a value according to what you think should be true today or hope might be true in the future. Be honest and assign a value to the statements on the basis of your lived experience.
